Safety Tips For Working in Warm Weather

After a long and brutal winter, the weather has finally started to warm up. Many construction projects have started back up again, many relieved the frigid cold winds and snow are behind us.  With that said, spring and summer bring their own unique challenges for those working in the construction weather and if you’re not careful, it can create dangerous conditions for the unprepared.

Here are a few things workers should know about working in warm weather:
  • ·    A nice perk about warmer weather means saying goodbye to heavy-duty coats and coveralls meant for winter wear. At this time, wearing protective layers will only put stress on your body, so aim to work in loose, lightweight clothing. In a few months, you’ll want to make a habit of regularly using sunscreen; working outdoors can wreak extensive damage to your skin if not protected.
  • ·      Remember to conserve energy while working and know your personal limits. Sometimes going too hard in warmer temperatures can lead to undue stress or worse, exhaustion or heat stroke.
  • ·      As the adage goes: “April flowers bring May showers.” Plenty rainfall can present a hazard for workers working on high-rises, walkways and many other surfaces slick with rain. It can be a hazard for those working with live cables. It also poses a bigger problem when mixing with dirt or sand to turn into mud, not only posing a danger to workers but also equipment and machinery too. Make sure to wear protective gear including raincoats and waterproof boots and double down on wiping mud from your boots before climbing into equipment.  When working in rainy conditions where visibility is poor, keeping your protective eye gear clean and ready to use at all times while wearing reflective outerwear will take you far.
  • ·    For machinery, it’s best to give equipment meant for outdoor usage a maintenance check to ensure you won’t run into any surprise problems waiting for you that may have occurred during a period of inactivity.
  • ·  If you’ve kept up the habit of drinking plenty of water and fluids over the hot summer months well into the winter, you can’t stop now. Spring days have a tendency to begin cold before warming up and if you’re not prepared, you can get caught with a bad case of dehydration before lunch, provided you avoid drinks with sugar or caffeine.
